The Successful Start Guide
A successful plot begins with patience and observation. Before your first sow, clear perennial weeds meticulously and observe the sun’s path across your soil. We recommend a ‘no-dig’ approach: lay a thick mulch of rotted organic matter to suppress weeds while feeding the soil biology below. Start with hardy basics, broad beans, onions, and potatoes, to build momentum throughout your first season.
Last Frost Window: Typically early-May. Monitor night forecasts carefully after early warm spells; a late frost can set your season back by weeks.
Hydration Routine: Focus on deep morning watering. Providing humidity to the roots before midday heat ensures your new starts established deep root systems.

What's going on in March
What we're sowing
There's a real sense of Spring in the air and its a super busy time for sowing. For those with polytunnels, greenhouses or just some window cill space, now is the time to sow veg that has a long growing time, particularly tomatoes, aubergines and peppers. Many annual flowers will be started indoors and seed potatoes will be planted this month along with spring sown-garlic and onions. One of our community, John, grows huge garlic bulbs.. we are all in awe!
What we're harvesting
We're at the 'hunger gap' time of year where there isn't much coming out of the plots, though there are some very fine cabbages, cauliflowers, kale and herbs to be seen across the site. Many of the community have been busy preparing their plots for the season ahead by weeding, mulching to enrich the soil and cleaning tools.
What we're up to
We've had a couple of 'working party' days where a group of plot holders spend a couple of hours tidying areas that need attention, clearing brambles and helping to cover vacant plots to keep the weeds at bay. It's always a fun morning catching up and enjoying some delicious homemade cakes, tea and coffee once we're done!
